Spotlight And Interview With Best Selling Author Alana Munro

Alana Munro is not only an author who wrote the best selling book Women Behaving Badly, she’s also an amazing person. She’s always willing to lend a helping hand, and I’m lucky to have met her this year.

Women Behaving Badly has been receiving excellent reviews. I love the cover. It’s brilliant, don’t you think?

Blurb:
Have you ever been hurt by a woman? Are you fed up with the constant bitching, gossiping and manipulation between the
females in your life? Do you want happier and healthier relationships with females? Do you wish to weed out the toxic women and seek out only positive women?

If you have ever wondered why some women are complicated creatures this book will offer you straight talking answers. This book will highlight all the strange, controlling and spiteful behaviours that some females specialise in. This book attempts to understand what actually drives women to be cruel or bitchy to each other. It attempts to make sense of the huge expectations women place on each other. How can you avoid toxic women? What bad behaviours should you be looking out for? This book explores every cruel behaviour possible and attempts to understand what is really going on between the females in your life.

Women Behaving Badly – Exposing the Truth about Female Friendship made it to #1 on Amazon Kindle USA during August 2013. She topped the paid books about ‘Emotions and Feelings’ chart on two separate occasions in August. She was even #5 for paid books about ‘Relationships’. This is a massive achievement if you consider the vastness of the American Kindle book market.

Bio:
Alana Munro lives in Australia with her husband, 3 kids and their puppy. Born in Scotland, she acquired a Bachelor of Arts degree from an Edinburgh University before jumping head first into motherhood. Alana spends much of her days trying to ignore the ever expanding pile of dirty washing, trying to write, counting down the hours till it is ‘wine o’clock’ (5pm is a respectable hour for a shiraz?) and sipping on camomile tea that’s went cold – again.
Initially Alana started writing articles and blogging. Through her early work she reconnected with her love of words. After two L-O-N-G years, two house moves and new baby added to the mix - Alana’s debut book, Women Behaving Badly was finally published.

In the first week alone, 500 books were downloaded from Amazon and with lots of pleasant reviews doing the rounds, Alana has been encouraged to write her second book.
In recent times, Alana runs a Google+ community for all writers, bloggers and poets. Support-a-Writer offers support and encouragement to all new writers. The members share marketing tips, discuss their writing ideas and cheer each other on. It is a very active and friendly community, do consider joining if you hope to discover new talent or you are a writer looking to connect. You will be sure to receive a warm welcome!

Interview Questions:

What were you like as a child?

I was quite shy but engaging with people I knew. I was a little bossy boots when I was really young! I loved time alone but also had no trouble meeting new friends. I was open and friendly to everyone. I wore my heart on my sleeve. I believed people were good and wouldn't hurt me, but sometimes they did hurt me badly. I was a day dreamer and romantic. I was vulnerable. I was trusting. I wanted desperately to believe that other people shared my innocence.

What’s your biggest regret?

I try not to hold onto regrets, but if I am honest I'd say I wish I had studied something completely different at university. Don't get me wrong - my business & marketing degree is useful but looking back there are other subjects that I would've been more passionate about. There's always time to remedy that. It's no big deal really but it is something I think about.

What would you do if the new house you moved into was haunted?

I'd be very freaked out. I'd definitely consider calling in a professional to politely ask the ghost to move on or help the ghost move forward.

What is your biggest fear?

Anything terrible happening to my children and husband. Nothing else bothers me, everything else can be fixed, changed etc, but if anything happens to them my entire world would unravel.

If you can go anywhere in the world, where would it be?

I'd go to France, Spain, or Italy. I'd eat and drink far too much! I love those countries. The lifestyle's brilliant, the foods good, the wines wonderful...what's not to love about that? :)

What’s your biggest turn off?

People who are rude, bitchy, people who think they are superior, and people who are snobby. I find people with these characteristics really off putting and I struggle to connect with them as people. They lack respect for other people and that's just not cool with me. I have become less tolerant to these toxic/negative people as I have grown older. Life is just too short to spend your time with people who bring you down.

I totally agree with you.

What’s your favorite movie?

Groundhog day - anything with Bill Murray wins me over. I also adore a lot of Tom Hanks movies - like Splash and Big. I watched those two movies a zillion times as a little girl. I loved them!

If you had the opportunity to know when and how you’re going to die, would you want to know?

Oh, I don't know! Part of me says yes, but then I'd probably go a bit loopy knowing my future reality. Wouldn't we all lose it if we knew when it was going to happen? I think most of us cope with the reality of our death by blocking it out. It's scary to consider. I have been considering my own mortality quite a lot recently. I think I am beginning to accept that life is short and I better make the most of it! I don't know if the knowledge of my death would bring me peace. But then again, you never know, knowing might be a good thing. If it says I will be eaten by a shark - I won't go near the beach ever again! ;)

What is your ultimate goal in life?

To find inner peace and to witness my beautiful boys grow up to become wonderful, compassionate humans who take their old mum out for her dinner on her Birthday. They can all carry me home after I've had too many martini's. I want to have quality relationships with my kids. That's incredibly important to me. Nothing else matters - so I guess you could say my ultimate goal is ensuring there's special bonds with our children that last a lifetime and beyond us existing. For me, it's all about building strong relationships with the people who matter.

How did you meet your husband and was it love at first sight?

I met my husband when I was 19, he was 20. I was on holiday in Majorca, Spain with a group of school friends, and he was with his school mates. Our paths crossed at the hotel bar. We just looked at each other, sized each other up, but we said nothing. I remember thinking, 'Wow, I need to see him again...somehow.' Thankfully he was thinking the same. That same night, our paths crossed again just a couple of hours later. I walked into a night club, and he was standing at the bar with his mates. My blood pressure must have sky rocketed, but I tried to look very cool and calm! This time I smiled at him. He came over to me and asked me to dance. That night we danced and had so much fun. I had to leave a week before him. Something in the pit of my stomach felt very wrong. It didn't feel nice to leave him. I came back to Scotland, and my parents could see the stars in my eyes and were a little bit worried - well, it was a holiday romance! But he called as soon as he returned and the rest is history!

What a wonderful story.

If you had to be an animal, which one would you be and why?

A bird. I'd love the freedom of flying high above and going wherever I pleased. No more busy airports!

Now to the professional questions:

How did you come up with the idea for your book?

I was exhausted by the negative experiences that were building up in my mind. I had one more grown woman turn abusive, petty and toxic on me, and I just snapped inside. I thought, 'I can't be the only woman in this world who has experienced all these nasty women?' I knew I had to write down my experiences. From those experiences, I started to break them down and try to 'make sense' of why some women would behave so badly. What was motivating their behaviour? Why did some women expect so much from their female friends? What was I doing wrong? How could women ensure they had healthier friendships with one another? Did Sisterhood actually exist between normal every day women? I had a lot to think about. Women Behaving Badly - Exposing the Truth about Female Friendship was born.

Are you an outliner or do you just go for it and write?

I need to have a rough idea of what I am trying to achieve. So I usually write a few pages worth of ideas and then build from the early ideas I have.

What are the things you did to promote your book?

This sounds pretty old school, I contacted the newspaper in my city. They ran a story about my book and from there the ABC radio network wanted to interview me. So from that I discovered that the more old fashioned media is still very worthwhile. I urge other authors to not ignore these more traditional media outlets. Don't just rely on social media. Authors need to use every outlet available. Of course, as it is 2013, I do use social media and my blog http://alanamunroauthor.com/ is a wonderful avenue for people to discover my book.

Do you plan on writing more books and if so what?

Yes, I'd love to. I need to make the time. I am busy with marketing my debut release, and I have a new book marketing business venture I am working on. But in time, I'd love to write another book. I'd like to do a follow up book of Women Behaving Badly. I am also working on a new inspirational, self-help book.

Did you always want to be a writer?
I wanted to be a lot of things! And why ever not, children should be allowed to dream and try new paths. I have always enjoyed writing, painting, photography, fashion, sociology, psychology - you name it, I love it! Whenever the teacher asked me to write what I wanted to be - I'd write so many ideas down. I didn't see why I had to just pick one, couldn't I try a few out? My school friends would say, 'Alana, just pick something!' But I didn't want to trap myself, I wanted to keep my options wide open. I'm still the same. I have a zillion different ideas and things I'd like to try.

If you can do anything in the world to make a living, what would it be?

Ideally I'd love to make enough from my book writing, but I am realistic, these days that is not so easy to achieve. I am looking into other avenues that still allows me to be creative. I am looking into starting a book marketing company with a friend who is a graphic artist. I'd provide the book marketing and she could custom design the book cover. We're hoping to offer pretty extensive packages to ensure authors gain genuine online exposure and we plan to keep our services affordable. I love to support authors, so this venture would certainly be a great role for me.

That would be awesome! I can always use some book marketing help. :)

Where can people find your book?

At Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Waterstones, Tesco, WHSmith, Google Books.

9/25/2013 , , , 0 Comments

I have an author I want you guys to know about, her name is Wendy Owens. Sacred Bloodlines is the first book in the series. I love this cover btw.

Oh! And guess what? This book is free!

Yay!

Check out what it's about.

Blurb:

Tragedy has defined Gabe's short existence in this world. An ominous darkness lurked on the edge of his existence until one day in a subway, strange things start happening. A series of events lead Gabe into a new and fascinating life filled with angels and demons, but he isn't sure if he wants to be a part of it.

Gabe is thrust into the middle of this exciting world that is full of things he has longed for in his life but it comes with a price. This new life also promises constant terrifying dangers that Gabe fears he may not be able to survive.

Excerpt #1

Feeling confident the danger had passed, Gabe climbed up onto the seat. He pulled the handle, pushing the heavy door open with his feet. On the ground in front of him, he saw Uri on his knees clutching an unconscious Sophie. Nearby, there was a small mountain of ash.

"Is she ..." Gabe paused, unsure what to even ask. None of what had just happened made any sense.

"Help me get her in the back," Uri said with a strained voice, motioning to him.

Gabe quickly ran to Uri’s side and swung around to hold her feet. Uri climbed in first, pulling Sophie in behind him as Gabe guided the rest of her. Gabe thought about how he had admired her boot clad feet when he first saw her. He wished with everything in him that she would be all right.

"You come around this side and hold her head," Uri beckoned.

Gabe made sure Sophie’s lower half was securely in the car, then closed the door as gently as he could. He rushed to the other side of the car to take Uri’s place. As he came around the back, he saw two more piles of ash where the creatures that were looking at him had been.

He hesitated for a moment as Uri stepped out of the way, allowing Gabe to slide into place, cradling Sophie’s head in his lap. Even lifeless, she was beautiful, Gabe thought. Her skin was so pale; it had a gorgeous alabaster quality to it. He wasn’t sure how she did it, but he knew she had saved him.

Uri jumped quickly behind the wheel and searched frantically for the keys. Gabe saw they were still dangling from the ignition. Leaning forward, he placed a hand on Uri’s shoulder. Uri looked back at him; Gabe could see the worry in his eyes. Gabe motioned toward the keys, slightly clearing his throat. Uri looked down and with a sigh started the car, pulling back out onto the deserted road. Minutes passed with Uri frantically checking over his shoulder.

"How is she?" he finally asked Gabe.

Gabe looked at Sophie’s body, lying there, unsure how to even answer that question.

"Seems to be the same," he responded honestly. "I don’t understand. What happened to her?"

Uri stared at the road.

"There’s a lot you don’t understand right now, Gabe," Uri answered, clearly not wanting to deal with a bunch of questions. "All you need to know is Soph used every ounce of power she had to save us."

All of the questions Gabe had wanted answers to suddenly didn’t seem important. He leaned forward and noticed Uri had increased their speed to just over one hundred miles per hour, Gabe thought it prudent to say something.

"What if we get pulled over? Might be hard to explain what’s wrong with her." Gabe had dealt with the cops enough in his life. He knew what it would be like trying to explain a half dead girl in the back seat.

"Right, right," Uri responded without changing speed.

"Caecus," Uri stated in a powerful voice.

"What?" Gabe asked.

"Oh," Uri responded realizing Gabe had no idea what was happening. As they sped down the street, Uri searched for the words.

"Look, I know this is all must seem pretty messed up and I want to explain everything, really I do, but I think it’s better if you wait and talk to Michael."

"Can you at least tell me what you just said? I heard Sophie say something back at the roadside I didn’t understand either," Gabe pleaded.

"At the manor we learn a lot of things, one of the things they teach us ... some might call ... spells."

"Like magic?" Gabe asked, trying not to laugh. The more he thought about it the less funny it seemed. After everything he had seen, did it really seem so impossible that magic existed?

"I suppose, but it’s the source behind our magic that makes it work. It’s a divine power," Uri explained, increasing his speed even more. "I promise, if you have any questions after talking to Michael, I will answer them for you. He’s the best one to explain all of this. I put an incantation on the car so it’s invisible."

"Yeah, right, we’re invisible," Gabe said in disbelief, but then suddenly remembered back to the subway and how the officers seemed to not even notice them. "Wait, like you did in the city, with all those police officers?"

Uri glanced back at Gabe, his worry giving way for a moment to an impressed stare. "Exactly, I used a distraction spell on them allowing us to sneak by cloaked."

"So that scream wasn’t real?" Gabe asked. Uri nodded his head affirmatively.

Gabe’s head felt like it was spinning. Monsters. Magic. He had always worried about the evils he had known in the world. Now it appeared there were unknowns that he always thought were make believe to worry about, too.

He leaned back and looked at Sophie’s face, as he did, his thoughts seemed to calm. He began to stroke her auburn hair, admiring how soft it was. Captivated by Sophie, he didn’t realize his hands had begun to burn. He heard Uri’s muffled voice and as he looked up at him, he felt an overwhelming feeling of nausea and realized everything had become blurry.

Uri was turned, looking at him, shouting something, but at that point, Gabe couldn’t hear him. A moment later, Gabe felt like the car was spinning uncontrollably. The nausea overcame him and he seriously thought he might be sick. He looked down at Sophie to make sure she was still all right. His hands were holding her head gently, but they no longer seemed like his hands. There was a glowing, blue light coming from his palms. He began to hyperventilate. Everything went black.

“I couldn't put it down. So I finished it last night and all I can say is WOW! This book was amazing and different.” Brianna (Book Blogger)

I loved how the author took a different approach to writing a love story in modern times with the paranormal element present. I thought it was absolutely wonderful and refreshing. Marvelous!” Kathy H (Amazon Reviewer)

I will admit I scoffed at the way it started but in the end I had fallen in love with this story…completely untraditional it was a very original idea, not to mention modern. This story had
such a good plot and the story structure was sound.

About the Author

Mia Hoddell lives in the UK with her family and two cats. She spends most of her time writing or reading and loves anything paranormal. Mia always had a love of writing but never reading. She was more interested in sports and hated sitting still - despite getting three poems published before the age of sixteen. Finally though, she found some novels that captured her interest and developed a love of reading which is now one of her favourite hobbies.

Mia began with poems before moving on to short stories. Although she enjoyed this, Mia found she had too much to tell with too little space, so later on she created her first series 'The Wanderer Trilogy' and from there other ideas have emerged. With a total of nine books planned at this moment, she is busy working on her second series 'Elemental Killers' before moving onto the next idea on her ever growing list.

***Excerpt***

Happy with the amount of photos I had collected I started to head back out of the forest, still flicking through my shots. As well as close ups, I had taken a few landscapes and as I was almost at the edge of the forest I noticed something in one of the photographs that made me stop.
In the left hand corner was a figure that looked mostly human, but was blurred as if they were moving on the spot.
A cold shudder shot through me.
Looking over my shoulder I became slightly panicked and felt as if someone was following me.
My eyes flicked and searched the shadows. Even though there was no sign that anything had ever been behind me, the forest looked different now - dark and threatening.
Instinctively I broke away and ran, still clutching the camera that was displaying the freaky image. Surrounded by trees I didn’t stop until I was free of the forest and back in the open light and sight of my house.
Throwing open my door, I slumped against the inside of it, regaining my breath from the short sprint. Once I had recovered I looked down at the photo once more, just to make sure that I hadn’t been seeing things. The old saying “the camera never lies,” came into my mind and for the first time I wished it not to be true. Sure enough though, as I looked down at the screen, the figure was still there and this time I noticed a red and orange glow around where its feet should have been. The image almost looked like the person was on fire but I thought I would have surely noticed if there had been a burning man in front of me.

Excerpt #1

There was a deer to my left, simply watching me. She was beautiful and majestic. She came towards me the moment I wished I could pet her. My hand slowly reached out and touched her course coat. Huge brown eyes looked into mine. There was no fear.

You’re lovely,” I whispered.

So are you,” a deep voice said from behind me.

I turned violently, scaring the deer off into the trees. Mr. Sexy was standing five feet in front of me. Jeans and a fitted white t-shirt clothed his fit body.

You’re here.”

Of course I am, where else would I be?”

I thought…well, I wasn’t sure if this was our dream or just mine.”

It’s ours Livvie. It’s ours. Always ours.”

Excerpt #2

She calmed a bit. She seemed to sense I was near. Then…she whispered, “Mr. Sexy? Are you here?”

My heart almost stopped. How….there was no way she would be able to detect my presence. She was human and humans couldn’t observe us.

I may be crazy and just talking to myself, but I feel like you just touched my face.”

My heart did stop this time. I slowly reached out and touched her face again, my thumb tracing circles around her chin. She gasped and reached her hand to mine. She was touching her face, but at the same time I could feel her.

Excerpt #1

Groaning, I took her face in my hands, despite her resistance. I leveled our eyes, staring deeply into her lively green irises. “Love, I’m sorry. I’m jealous because of the way he looks at you. I don’t like it.”

Her face softened. Sighing, she placed her hands on mine. Her delicate fingers clenched around my palms, causing a tightening of desire in my stomach. Hot air exhaled out my nostrils as I tried to control my urges. My eyes roamed to her lips. Full and soft looking, I wanted to take them into my own and devour her right then and there.

“Scott, look at me.”

“I am,” I said hungrily. I licked my lips in anticipation. She bit hers in response and I groaned, moving closer to claim her.

Excerpt #2

Crap. Mom is gonna be so pissed,” she muttered, her hand squeezing her temple.

Leaning down, I placed my hand on the tree, allowing my fingers to trail over the splintered wood. There was a dent where the bark had broken off. A very noticeable dent. I caressed the tree, mumbling how sorry I was to it when I heard J behind me, “Ummm….”

I turned quickly, wondering what in the heck had happened now. “What is it, J?”

“The tree…it’s…it’s growing back where you touch it, Liv,” she said, astonished.

“What?” I gave her a look that clearly showed how crazy I thought she was, but then, I looked back at the pine. Peering closer, I could see the dent wasn’t as large. My shaking hand lovingly rested on the top of the dent. I closed my eyes and thought only of restoring the tree back to its full self. I felt energy running through my body, a tingly sensation that warmed me to my core. Heat radiated out my palm, pouring life back into the tree. I don’t know how I knew when it was whole, but I did. It was like the energy sensed it and just stopped. I drew my hand back, feeling a little weak.
