a Young Adult Fantasy Adventure series
published by Patchwork Press
Orenda Join forces with a parallel universe.

With the threat of her younger sister in danger, Lil crosses dimensions but it may cost her even more than she bargained for.

A sword wielding girl, the eternal suit, and a parallel universe come together in this action-packed Young Adult fantasy adventure that will keep readers of all ages turning the pages. Orenda is the first novel in the Orenda series.

Excerpt:

Lil stood firm, sword-in-hand, staring at the beast as it flew directly at her. “How do I kill it?” She raised the sword above her head with two hands.

Hudson glanced at her. “With what we taught you. The dragon is no different than a man.”

“It has wings and is flying at me. I’d say it’s different!”

Blurb:

When Graham Logan, a Scottish earl turned vampire by a dark wizard’s curse, draws the Queen of Swords, he knows he’s about to meet the love of his life. For the third time. But surrendering his heart will mean risking her life…or making her what he is. Neither of which his morals will permit him to do. Graham, who believes he lost his soul to the curse, rages at God: Why give her back only to take her again?

Cat Fingal, the third incarnation of Graham’s twin flame, won’t let him escape so easily. As soon as they meet, she feels she knows him and begins having past-life flashbacks. A white witch, she casts a spell to summon him, wanting answers and to fill the void she’s felt all her life.
Graham has other problems, too. Like the seductress who wants him for herself and the dark wizard who cursed him and killed his beloved the first two times.

Will he find a way to save her this time around? Or will she save him?

Excerpt and related meme:

12th May. Visited Caitriona tonight for the first time since becoming a monster. She slept, unaware of my presence, & for a time, I was content simply to observe. As the hours passed, I began to wonder what might happen if she awoke to find me in her room. Would she think me a wraith? Would she think it a dream? Desiring to know, & to get closer, I sat down on the corner of the bed, alert for any stirrings. Seeing none, I crawled up the bed until I reached her side. Still she did not stir. Ever so carefully, I set my head upon the pillow next to hers. She slept on. Drinking in her scent, I felt contentment for the first time since fate & Fitzgerald tore us apart. I closed my eyes & must have drifted off, because next I knew, her arm fell across my chest. Startled awake, I found her blinking at me in disbelief.

I lay there, still as death, waiting for her to react. Her hand moved up my chest to my face. She dragged her fingers across my jaw, pressed them against my lips, touched the end of my nose, my eyebrows, my forehead. As she combed back my hair, she whispered: “This must be a dream. But you feel so real, so alive. I don’t ken how such a thing is possible; nor do I care. I only pray I shall never awaken.”

I kept still. I could hear her heartbeat, smell her blood, but her blood was not what I craved. She set her head on my chest & started to sob.

“Am I dreaming?” she asked, soft & low.

“Aye.”

She raised herself up, came over me & pressed her mouth against mine.

“Can we make love in my dream?”

“Aye.”

When it was over, I collapsed beside her, feeling so elated, so profoundly moved, I very nearly wept.

She set her head against my chest. “Will you promise me something?”

“Anything, m’aingael.”

“Always come to me like this in my dreams.”

Author Bio:

Nina Mason is a hopeful romantic with strong affinities for history, mythology, and the metaphysical. She strives to write the same kind of books she loves to read: those that entertain, edify, educate, and enlighten. Three of her books will be published in 2014: The Queen of Swords, an urban fantasy/paranormal romance; The Knight of Wands, book one in the Knights of Avalon Series; and The Tin Man, a political thriller about the dangers posed by media monopolies.  She is currently at work on Book Two of the Knights of Avalon series and is itching to get back to a book she started a while back about a merman who falls for an oil company spokeswoman after a phantom tanker capsizes on the coast of the Hebrides islands. When not writing, Nina works as a communications consultant, doll maker, and home stager. Born and raised in Southern California, she now lives in Woodstock, Georgia, with her husband, teenage daughter, two rescue cats, and a Westie named Robert.

Boilerplate interview with the author:

Q. Tell us about your book.

A. The Queen of Swords tells the story of a bookish white witch who returns every century to reunite with her earthbound soul mate. He’s a Scottish earl turned vampire by a dark wizard’s curse back in the Regency era on the eve of their wedding. She came back once before in the Edwardian era only to be killed by his maker in the same manner as before. He believes he has no soul, so can’t understand why she keeps coming back. She believes he does have a soul and that she comes back to free him from the curse. The story follows their journey as they try to work out who’s right and how they can stop history from repeating.

Q. After this, what's your next project?

A. My current work-in-progress is book two in The Knights of Avalon series. After that, I haven’t decided. Probably another paranormal romance/urban fantasy. I’ve got a stalled manuscript about an oil company spokeswoman who gets involved with a merman during an oil spill in the Hebrides. Might get back to that one, or write one featuring Benedict and Avery, the secondary couple in The Queen of Swords. I’d also like to maybe write a sequel to The Tin Man, my political thriller releasing in August. It tells of two journalists thrown together to solve a series of murders tied to a global conspiracy to take over the media.

Q. What inspires you to write what you do?

A. All of my paranormal stories are inspired by my love of the history and mythology of Scotland, my interest in the unknowable, and my belief in the redemptive power of love.

Q. When did you start writing?

A. About as soon as I could write the alphabet. When I was a kid, I won an essay contest sponsored by the local library (I was an avid reader and always did the summer reading challenge). Back in the days of typewriters, I wrote a romance novel about a couple of ballet dancers, but never did anything with it. Didn’t try my hand at fiction again until five or six years ago, when I started what is now The Queen of Swords.

Q. What inspired you to write the book?

A. I started the first draft after reading Twilight. While I liked the saga, I also found myself frustrated by the lack of sex and Edward’s lack of history. In literature, vampires originally personified uncaged sexuality, so a chaste vampire seemed counter-intuitive to me. Plus, I felt writing an immortal creature provided fantastic opportunities to build an interesting backstory. What had he/she seen and experienced over the centuries? How was he/she affected by it? My immortal characters all have a history tied to the world and what they’ve seen and experienced has colored them in some way.

Q. Are you a careful planner or do you let the story guide you?

A. I do a bit of both. I work out the characters and their motivations, setting, and where I want the story to go. I also tend to do index cards for each scene or major plot point from start to finish. Once I begin to write, it can go completely off the rails, depending on where the characters want to take it. As long as they’re reaching the touchstones, I let them do what they want. If they go too far off track, I either re-plot the novel or rein them in, depending on which direction seems better at the time.

Q. Who is your favorite among your characters?

A. I love them all, of course. Graham, the hero in The Queen of Swords, is both noble and funny. Callum, the hero in The Knight of Wands, is a good-hearted romantic. Leith, the hero of my WIP, is a bit on the dark side, but still well-intentioned. If pressed to pick just one, I’d have to go with Alex Buchanan, the journalist hero in The Tin Man. He’s very complex and has lots of demons to overcome, but also is a really good guy.

The Pacific Northwest is my home. After living in the dry desert of Arizona for over 23 years, I tired of always praying for rain, so I decided to come and get it on my own. Gray skies and deep forests give way to the most glorious summers you could ever imagine. Not to mention the abundance of berries, clams, oysters, salmon, fruits of all kinds, to me the Puget Sound area of Washington is the richest place in the world.

I have seven children, all grown. Sixteen grandchildren that need stories written, and so they are my inspiration.

People always find it fascinating that I lived in a mud house for over 13 years, hauling water from the well in a bucket, cooking on a wood stove, planting blue corn in desert washes, and generally living out of the box. Some of these experiences are tapped into my novels.

My website is http://gardnersart.com You’ll find books, audios, artwork and how our movie production is coming along on that site.

Book Review on Dark Illusions the Next Chapter by Ariana Browning

Dark Illusions the Next Chapter is the second book in this cool ass trilogy.
Last year, I read the first one (Dark Illusions the Beginning) and reviewed it here on this blog. I really like this story, and I think Ariana Browning writes well.

*Spoiler Alert. There are spoilers in this review. You have been warned*

Kat has recently been “Awakened.” What that means is she’s a vampire with the ability to shapeshift into a wolf. She's a strong female character, and I absolutely love that about her.

The vampire/werewolf race is divided into clans. The two main ones are the Raaka and the Runsasi.

They don’t get along.

At all.

Kat is now part of the Raaka clan, whereas Julian, the man she loves, is the prince of the Runsasi. Towards the end in the last book, the Raaka went after Julian. The goal was to kill him so Cameron who rules the Raaka clan and through blood, is Kat’s mate, can become prince of all the clans. They almost succeeded in ending Julian’s life. In secret, Julian stays hidden so Cameron and the others will believe they indeed murdered him. Only a few people know he’s alive. Kat of course is one of them. Hell, she saved his ass. So, yeah, she knows.

This second book in the trilogy begins with Kat and Julian hiding out in his cabin. Julian wants to keep Kat safe because he knows Cameron will either kill her for ditching him or give her some serious beatings. Kat is strong-willed and has a mind of her own. She'll be damned if she’s going to allow Julian to keep her locked away from everyone. She’s also frustrated and pissed off that he’s not totally open with her. He’s always holding things back to protect her. She doesn’t take too kindly to his behavior and decides to do things her way.

Kat bails and soon after Cameron apprehends her. He takes her back to his place and keeps her chained up. Literally. Cameron and the Raaka clan notice something is different about Kat, but they can’t figure it out. Kat becomes aware of her differences as well, like she can heal faster than the others, she can stay out in the sun without its rays harming her, she can pick up people’s thoughts, and she’s quicker than she should be.

Kat is beautiful, and her presence radiates a sexual energy and confidence that turn heads when she enters a room. She uses it to her advantage.

Kat is a sexual dynamo.

When she’s hot and horny, everybody can sense her desires. But on the same token, she knows when one of the guys wants to ravish her body. It goes both ways I guess.

Sean is one of Cameron’s trusted friends and next in line to rule the Raaka clan. He and the Raaka guys form an alliance with Kat. She wants to eliminate Cameron, which will put Sean in power, and he’ll become her mate. She also plans on becoming queen to all the clans and change the rules that she feels are outdated. If she and Sean follow through with their plans, they’ll be defying Julian, and there will be hell to pay. He’s hardwired to kill, and if he gives in to his Ripper side, watch out. When he’s in that mindset, he’s a coldblooded murder and excels at it.

Will Kat destroy Cameron?

Will Kat, Sean, and some of the Raaka guys take on Julian and risk the wrath of the Ripper and possible death?

You’re going to have to read this book to find out. If you haven’t read the first one, you need to. This is a wonderful trilogy, and I would recommend it to anyone.

Exclusive Teaser- Never before shared!
Lifting the damaged pillow, I examined the fabric, feeling my nerves skyrocket again. This didn’t look chewed up. It looked sliced. And it was one of the pillows from my side of the bed. Getting a garbage bag, I carefully, I put the contents inside and made my way into the kitchen. Pausing to stare at the block of sharp cutting knives on the counter, I noticed they all seemed to be in the right place. Grabbing a plastic baggie, I slid my hand inside and carefully began sliding each knife from its slot one at a time and examining it. I stopped when I arrived at a small paring knife, immediately spotting a tiny clump of black strings clinging near the base that exactly matched the color of my pillowcase. My heart was pounding. Unless Cami was pissed at me and had gone a little crazy, someone had been in my house—our house—with her.

"Lacey Weatherford keeps the surprises coming. Just when you think the story ended at SMITTEN, she hits us with a semi truck, POW, with another fantastic and explosive storyline. Makes you fall in #LOVE with the characters all over again!”
-Lisa Markson, The Paranormal Bookworm

“Dylan and Cami have done it again! They made me laugh, cry, and turned my heart into a puddle of goo! "LOVE" is the best book in this series yet, and I have enjoyed every step of the journey this series took me on!”

Book Review On Copyright By Lori Lesko

Blurb: Amber Tyler is living every author’s dream: her books are all best sellers and she writes full time. She has worked hard and is well-accomplished in her career, and she has the support and love of her beautiful children and girlfriend.

But the dream soon turns into a terrible nightmare when her latest manuscript is stolen. She decides to fight for what is rightfully hers, only to find that the harder she tries, the easier it all slips through her fingers, putting her career, her family, and her life in jeopardy.

                                               ***

I normally don’t read books like this, because I’m more into the paranormal/fantasy genre. However, I’m glad I did. The story was really good.

Amber Tyler is a bestselling author. She has it made. She lives in a beautiful house on the beach, has two wonderful kids, and a gorgeous girlfriend. The story opens with Amber working on her book. She has a heart attack and has to go into immediate surgery. With the help from her loving family, she recovers from her chest cracking surgery. One day she decides to invite the father of her son’s girlfriend over for dinner.

He’s a lawyer.

He’s pleasant.

He’s down-to-earth.

And he wears thousand dollar suits.

During their friendly conversation, Amber discovers the book she was working so hard on prior to her heart attack has been stolen. Not only that, it’s been published, and it’s a best seller. Amber hires this lawyer and while he’s working on her case, her life spirals out of control.

F.Y.I. This book gets suspenseful from here.

Seriously.

My heart was racing throughout some of the scenes. I don’t have high blood pressure, but I bet it was jacked up from time to time. That’s how good of a job this author did.

Amber is a recovering addict. With the stress she’s under, she gives into her self-destructive side and backslides to drinking alcohol and doing drugs again. This author did a wonderful job capturing what it’s like to be an addict.

Amber’s family kicks her out, and her life gets worse from there. It’s crazy what she goes through and the thoughts that rolls through her head. You're there, along for the ride with her, and let me tell ya . . . it's a dark, twisted road where alcohol and drugs becomes her master and she's its puppet.

Yes, I'm thinking of Master of Puppets by Metallica, because that song fits  Amber's addiction.

This book is well worth the read, and I would recommend it.

Blog Tour. My Writing In Progress.

Last week I was asked by the wonderful Yawatta Hosby, if I would answer the following four questions. Like myself, she’s an author. She writes psychology, horror, suspense, books. You should check out her Amazon author page: http://www.amazon.com/Yawatta-Hosby/e/B00CX7PPOO/
I read her first book called, One by One, and I really liked it. Her new release that I plan on reading is titled, Something Amiss

It so happens Yawatta is also a fan of my books, and I’m guessing that’s why she thought of asking me to do this blog tour with her.

Cool beans.

I’m up for it.

Oh, btw. If you're an author reading this, I tag you. I'm sure other peeps would like to know your answer to these questions, I know I would. Heads up. You have to tag another author.

So here we go with the questions and my answers.

1. What am I working on?

I’m working on Tangled Roots. It’s a companion to the Beyond the Eyes trilogy. Carrie and Tree are the main characters in this book. I did a post on the blurb. You can check it out here:

http://themusingwriter.blogspot.com/2014/03/tangled-rootsa-beyond-eyes-spin-off.html

Tangled Roots will be out this summer.

2. How does my work differ from others in its genre?

My stories are unique. I created a new mythology in my Beyond the Eyes trilogy. One of the loglines I use to market my books is this: Vampires and werewolves are cool but what about a new mythology?

Another one I use is this:
Forget about zombies. What about dark spirits dwelling in soulless people?

3. Why do I write?

Writing makes me happy. I love it. It entertains me. I don’t think I can ever stop writing stories. It’s who I am.

4. How does my writing progress work?

It starts out with an idea. I write it down. Then the characters make themselves known to me. I do a character sketch on each one. If a name doesn’t come to me, I’ll research names.

Google is my friend.

I Google almost everything.

Once I have the basics for a story, including a plot, I’ll plunge in and write. I always have a notebook beside me. I write down things I might forget and need to remember later on. I also use it to write page numbers down. For example, say on page 15 an angelic being visits Tree. Well, I know later on I’m going to forget what she said to him, so I write the page number in my trusty notebook with a sentence like, a female angelic being visits Tree and gives him important information. That way, if ten chapters later I need the information, I won’t have to scroll back and try to find it. It’s a timesaver and makes my life a little easier.

Once I get the rough draft completed, I’ll read over the entire manuscript and fix whatever problems I come across. After that I send it to my beta reader for her honest opinion. If there are more changes to be made, I’ll make them. From there, I’ll send it to my editor and make the changes he tells me to make. Then I’ll read it one last time before I get it formatted and published. I might this time around send Tangle Roots to another beta reader, just in case I miss something. I had missed a few things in The Devil’s Third which bugs me. They’re minor but being a perfectionist when it comes to my work, I’ll more than likely go and fix them when I have more time.

Anyway, that’s my process. It’s a lot of work, but when I receive comments like this one—I just finished "The Devil's Third." The books were great! I couldn't put them down. Even with a full time job and a young child I finished all three in a little over a week. I hope this isn't the last we hear about Nathan and Paige. I feel like there could be a many more great adventures in their futures. Thanks for writing such great stories! Erica—it’s so worth it. J

About the Author

While growing up, S.M. would travel the roads around her house while imagining she was somewhere else. Her imagination would take her everywhere, making the long hot summer days seem shorter throughout her fantasies.

At the age of twelve, she decided to write her first book. Filled mostly with dialog, she filled up one-hundred pages, front and back. After taking the book downstairs to show her mom, and persuading her to buy her more paper, she excitedly ran back to her room. As she barreled through the door, S.M. tripped over items left on her floor, and her papers came raining down in her room. Discouraged, she stood there in tears, picking up her papers and throwing them in the trash. Her work had no organization, no numbers on her pages, just a child fulfilling a joy that she would put down and not pick up again.

When she became older, she joined the military for something different. In that time, she was able to explore many places and even met her husband in Iraq. After coming home, she started her family in Arizona and went back to school, earning a Master's degree in Adult Education and Training.
