When I picked up AMEERAH I didn't know what I was in store for. This book started off as Ameerah telling her story and what an amazing story this has been.

I was in awe reading this book. Her story was one of sadness, betrayal, heartbreak, and a horrible ending.

Reading this book had me envisioning this awesome book on screen. I could sense the everything in the air. I can hear the music in my ears, smell the cigarette smoke and taste the alcohol in between my lips.

I loved how Rebekkah Ford made me feel like I was living in the 1920's which in fact would be a fascinating time to live (if you were a rebel like me).

I fell in love with how Rebekkah had me wanting more.

It was a wonderful book and I think all of my friends should read this!!!

I wish I could say more but I don't want to give anything away!

Ameerah was having the time of her life during the summer of 1925 when her high-hat parents were out of state on business. She was a flapper gal who drank, smoked, and loved to dance. She had two deep dark secrets that in the end ruined her and was used as ammunition to wrongfully commit her to an insane asylum where horrible things were done to her.

Before the light was taken from Ameerah, plunging her into the dark side of humanity, she experienced for the first time in her life, happiness and true love. Of course, all of this took place during prohibition where there were hidden illegal drinking nightclubs that people flocked to. The speakeasy. It was called “the speakeasy” because a bartender had to tell a patron who was ordering an alcoholic beverage to speak easy, so he wouldn’t raise suspicion. The term actually went back further than that, to the 1800s, but it was basically for the same reason. The speakeasy was also known as the blind pig or blind tiger. They were secretive joints that you had to find and give a password like panther sweat, in order to gain access to. A lot of speakeasies were run by gangsters, and they greased a lot of palms-political and law enforcement—in order to keep business rolling. In 1925, there were an estimated 30,000-100,000 speakeasies in New York City alone.

The south side cocktail was the drink Al Capone and his gang favored the most. Ameerah tried it when she went to a speakeasy with her best friend Betty and Betty’s bootlegging brother Abe. The drink is light and refreshing. The ingredients are simple.

5 fresh mint leaves

1 oz. simple syrup (one part sugar, one part water)

1 oz. fresh lemon juice

2 oz. gin

Garnish: mint sprig

Serve in a cocktail glass

Ameerah was born in 1907 in Manhattan, New York. She was the only child born to a prominent family. Her parents were elitist high-hats, who only cared about their social status. In 1925, at the age of eighteen, she finally had enough of them treating her like a puppet. She detested their snobbish attitudes and rebelled against them.

Ameerah was a flapper gal. She drank, she smoked and was the best hoofer in town. Because she knew how to dance so well, she was offered a job at a speakeasy, making a lot of dough. Of course, this was during prohibition when drinking was illegal and women who smoked were frowned upon. Ameerah didn't give a shit about that.

Prohibition:

Prohibition began on January 16, 1920. From then on, it was illegal to have alcohol.

America went dry.

The 18^th amendment prohibited the manufacture, sale, and possession of alcohol in the U.S. This law was an epic failure. Overnight people became criminals, hiding liquor in false books, eggshells, hollow canes, baby carriages, teddy bears . . . Women even hid alcohol beneath their dresses with a garter flask.

Yes, folks, civil disobedience was born.

Prohibition was difficult to enforce because of the widespread smuggling of illicit liquor. Law enforcement was unable to suppress it. People drank more during this time. Organized crime increased and gangsters got richer. A whole underworld of mobsters grew and big city mob bosses, such as Al Capone, rose to power. They fought over the control of liquor sales and other illegal activities such as prostitution and gambling. Violence was on the rise, all because of a stupid law.
