Love of History Creates Story Idea That Chills the Bones

I’ve been fretting over what to post about for a few days now, and then Sunday morning this idea came to me. I have to warn you, though, I’m going to be talking a little bit about my Beyond the Eyes trilogy, so this post will have some spoilers in it.

I think I’m fortunate to have a love of history. My dad is the same way, and I love talking to him about it. We get into some interesting conversations like historical mysteries and occultism. He knows a lot of shit. What’s even cooler is, I get ideas for my stories from these conversations, not to mention the things I’ve learned and experienced in my childhood.

Any writers out there or future writers who are sitting on the fence on what type of story to write, there are only two things you need to do to get you started . . .

1.) Don’t write what’s trending right now because by the time you finish your story there might be a different trend.

2.) Write what interest you–that fuels your passion. If you don’t, you won’t stick with it. You got to have that fire in your belly to where you’re thinking about your story off and on throughout your day and can’t wait to get back to it.

Wah-cah-cha-pah!

Easy peasy.

Of course, writing a book doesn’t end there, but that’s how you get started. I can always do a post on the rest some other time.

Anyway, after I came up with my story idea for my YA paranormal trilogy, it soon took on a life of its own. My love of history and mysticism began to pour into my story, bringing depth, color, and plausibility.

How?

I’ll tell ya how, but here’s where I say, “Spoiler alert!” Now there’s a lot going on in my, Beyond the Eyes trilogy, so I’ll just point out a couple historical parts where I interlaced it with fiction, thus creating a tapestry for the mind.

1.) King Solomon’s ring. There’s a legend he had a ring that can control demons. One night I was watching a show on The History Channel about it.

Bingo!

I already had a rough idea for a story: dark spirits walking among us in soulless humans. Now I have a motive. The “old one” who is an ancient dark spirit has been looking for this ring for thousands of years. Imagine what he can do if he gets a hold of it. He can control all the dark spirits and become God. He wants the ring and only Paige (my main character) can find it.

If it wasn’t for my love of history, I would have never known that. Of course, I added my own spin to it. I made the power of the ring impotent without Solomon’s incantations. But my characters can’t find the spells without the ring.

I personally think when you’re writing a story you should put your own twists in it. An author by the name of Regina Morris did just that in her book called Eternal Service. It has vampires; however, these vampires can adjust their age by the amount of blood they ingest. It’s a fresh idea and a good way to explain how these bloodsuckers are able to live with humans for thousands of years without raising eyebrows.

2.) Nazi week on The History Channel. Hitler and the whole Nazi regime fascinate me. I think it’s because I can’t fathom how one man can entrance others to do horrific and unspeakable things to another. And did you know the Nazi’s were heavily into the occult? They had a special organization under the control of Henrich Himmler who was the chief of the SS and head of the Gestapo. A very evil man–BTW. The organization was called Ahnenerbe. It was a Nazi think tank. They would send teams of archaeologists on top secret expeditions. Himmer was a Holy Grail enthusiast, and he once funded and promoted an expedition to find it. This is just the tip of the iceberg on how deep they were into the supernatural.

Anyway, check out these pictures. Doesn’t it chill you to the bone knowing the atrocities these men had committed?

Henrich Himmler.

Rudolf Hess. He was Hitler's deputy, the third most powerful man in the Third Reich. He was known to be a big occult supporter.

Hitler.

There are people who believe Hitler was possessed by Satan. I didn’t know this until recently and had already written in my third book in my YA paranormal trilogy (The Devil’s Third) that the “old one” done just that. He had possessed Hitler and the other dark spirits were the Nazi party. In Dark Spirits, Carrie tells Paige and Nathan about Aosoth (a wicked dark spirit) dwelling inside a Nazi. She then goes on and tells them what happens. To me, that’s some dark, scary shit. But again, I used my love of history and intertwined it into my story, making it my own and hopefully giving the YA paranormal genre something fresh and new to read about.

Here's what one reader said in her five star review on Dark Spirits:

I find her twist on a regular paranormal genre refreshing. She makes her own rules and forms a world all her own.

Here's what some other readers had said about my trilogy in their reviews:

A fresh look at the spiritual world.

Beyond the Eyes is a unique read.

The paranormal element of this story is really interesting.

They're saying it's fresh, unique, interesting, and I make my own rules.

That's what I'm talking about.

Make your story your own and readers will appreciate it. :)

Dark Spirits–An Excerpt

Dark Spirits is my second book in my YA paranormal series. It’s going through edits right now and will be available at the beginning of 2013. I thought I’d give you a sneak peek to one of the scenes in this next book. There might be some changes before it gets published, so you're basically reading part of the ARC (advanced readers copy).

Anyway, in this scene, Paige and Nathan are at the Sunday Market, finishing up eating their corndogs . . . Enjoy!

I rose and stuck my hand out for him to give me his corndog stick. He handed it to me, and I went to the overflowing trash can a couple yards away. Then my ears began to ring. I looked at Nathan, and he hurried to me at a painfully human pace. We looked around, but the few people strolling by were immersed in conversation and paid no attention to us.

Nathan took my hand and steered me in the other direction. "C’mon, let’s get back to the truck." As we rushed off, Nathan kept glancing over his shoulder, his posture stiff and alert.

Our ears continued to ring, but still nothing out of the ordinary caught my eyes. When we reached the parking lot, there were people filing into their vehicles and exiting the premises. I wondered if one of them could be a dark spirit. I was just about to get inside the truck when a soft crying noise tore at my heart. It sounded heartbroken and lost. I followed the sound while Nathan stuck our bags in the backseat. I moved to the front of the truck and there sitting on the curb was the most angelic-looking little girl I’d ever seen. She had to be about five years old, and I wondered where her mommy was. My heart immediately went out to her. She was crying in her tiny hands, leaning forward on her knees, her blonde curls tumbling over her face. She scooted her elbows above her knees while she continued to cry, pushing her blue dress up,
revealing black patent leather shoes and white laced socks.

"What’s wrong, sweetie? Did you lose your mommy?" I asked, kneeling in front of her.

"Paige, no!" Nathan hollered at the same time she dropped her hands and grabbed my wrist, yanking me toward her. She was amazingly strong, completely throwing me off guard.

She slowly rolled her head around her neck, her baby face contorting into a ghastly mask, her mouth opening and closing like a fish. Then her dark glowing eyes poured into mine. I was too stunned to do anything but stare, even though her grip was like a tourniquet around my wrist.

"Let. Her. Go," Nathan demanded, now by my side.

The girl jerked her head up, her glowing orbs on Nathan now. "You have no power over me," a man’s deep voice spewed forth from her pink, pouty lips, chilling me to the bone.

"No?" Nathan said, bending so his eyes were leveled with hers. "But I can break her neck, which will take you out of the equation."

"You can’t do that, Nathan," I gasped. "She’s a child!"

"She’s soulless, Paige," he said, keeping his eyes trained on her. "I’m going to tell you one more time. . . Let. Her. Go."

Nathan wasn’t playing around. He was serious, and his ears were red, signaling the rage boiling inside him. The dark spirit must have realized it because he released me. I stumbled sideways, falling into Nathan’s quick arms. The sheer force of it knocked us to a sitting position on the asphalt.

The little girl hopped to her feet and moved her head clockwise in little jerks, her mouth opened in a silent scream. She stepped forward and stopped in front of us. Her eyes rolled to the back of her head, then focused on me, dark and glowing. She grimaced, then blinked, and her eyes turned blue. "Help me," she said in a sweet toddler voice.

I reached for her, but Nathan snatched my wrist, locking his arms around mine. The girl scowled, then blinked, and her eyes were dark and glowing again. I sucked in a sharp breath, and her mouth formed a circle. Her head fell back in deep laughter. It was dark, sinister, and male.

She stopped, looked at me, and pointed. "Vos ero pessum ire," she said in the same deep man’s voice as before. Then she turned and ran away.

Ghost Haunting

Yay! I was finally able to get on Blogger tonight. I don’t know what happened, but I’m so glad it’s working now. :)

Oh! Have you guys ever heard of the ‘walking taco?’ It’s one of the coolest ideas ever. You take a grab bag of Doritos, crunch the bottom of the bag up with your hand, cut the top of the bag off, put lettuces, taco meat, onions, taco sauce, black olives, tomatoes, and cheese on it. And then you get a fork and can walk around with it without having mess.

Pretty cool, huh?

I never heard of a ‘walking taco’ until we moved here to North Dakota.

Now, moving on to what I had planned to post yesterday . . .

As most of you know, I grew up in a family that dealt with the paranormal, and although my parents had gone their separate ways when I was eight, the paranormal world still remained a constant in our household. I have no doubt in my mind that is why I love writing and talking about the supernatural world. And what is cool is, I can take my experiences and weave it into my stories. It’s kind of comical though, I fell in love and married a person who is totally not into this type of thing. It’s not like Kevin doesn’t believe in this stuff, but his argument is this: why go there? There’s too much going on in this world, and if we were to focus our energy on the supernatural world, we could easily slip into Peter Pan land and would want to stay there because it would be much more interesting than the mundaneness of our daily life.

True. I can understand that, however, my comeback to his argument is this: if you’re a logical, levelheaded person who can still live your daily life and not fall into the trap or allow your mind to be easily swayed into living a hocus pocus life, then why not? But what I appreciate about Kevin is he doesn’t expect me to mold my ideas and beliefs to his. He doesn’t want me to, which is a good thing because there’s no way I would anyway, and he respects the fact I’m my own person. Granted, it would be awesome if he were into it, but I could understand his beef about it.

Anyway, I ran across this video of a shadow person or spirit and wanted to share it with you. When I was very young, we lived in a house that was haunted. I remember this one night, I went into my sister’s room and crawled into her bed. She asked me what was wrong, and I told her I saw a witch. Before I had done that, my sister had seen a shadowy figure go down the hallway towards my room. Of course, being as young as I was, for some reason I thought it was a witch. Maybe because I used to have the same dream over and over again of being in the woods and seeing a figure wearing a cloak, beckoning me towards it.

Weird, right?

So check out this video. I had to post the link because the video won't post here.

So what do you think? I know a lot of videos tend to be bogus, however, this one reminded me of the shadowy figure in our house, and of other ones I've seen throughout my life. I could even go as far as to say it was a dark spirit from my Beyond the Eyes series. But there's more to it than that, and those who have already read my book know what I'm talking about.

*grins*

Talk to ya later.
