WLK excerpt

Dammit to hell. I can’t even enjoy a movie.

The nighttime air bit at my skin as thoughts of him chomped at my brain. He’d polluted me like a poison that spread throughout my mind and body, seizing every thought, leaving no rest. I loved horror movies and yet I couldn’t recall a single scene. Jimmie kept glancing at me, concern etching his face all the way through the ninety-minute show.

Soon Jimmie and I walked out of the theater, my hand resting in the crook of his elbow. Bitterness raged inside, heating my face against the breeze when I saw the limo roll toward us. He found me like he always said he would, but three fucking hours late.

I knew I wasn’t Dorian’s top priority, and I’d made some progress at keeping my jealousy under control, but no woman wanted to be shoved to the side every time it was convenient for a man. I tightened my grip on Jimmie’s sleeve and pulled him along just as the driver stepped into our path. I gave the chauffeur a shotgun-glare as he motioned me to the car. “Miss Torrance, Mr. Lincoln is waiting.”

My heart skipped ten beats, I couldn’t tear my eyes away when the dark window lowered and Dorian tousled his ebony hair with his fingers. He wasn’t in his usual attire, a business suit. Tonight he presented himself in casual wear. His sharp, handsome features were expressionless.

I closed my eyes, digging deep for the strength to tell him to get lost for standing me up, but I knew the words would never make it past my lips. I was a fool to entertain the thought. One look from those black eyes sifted me like wheat. Dorian practically owned me. That man was my tempter and my savior wrapped into one.

I met him at the lowest point of my life, after my mother died of cancer. The three jobs I was working to keep my head above water and pay off her medical bills were about to do me in physically. While I was waiting tables at the country club, Dorian swooped in from out of nowhere and rescued me like an injured bird. His amazing sixth sense alerted him that life was too much for me, and he offered me a strong shoulder to cry on. The floodgates opened and I unloaded my personal problems. Dorian Lincoln promised those problems would disappear with a simple acceptance of his proposition: give him power over my body, something Bianca wouldn’t allow.

Lifting my palm to Jimmie’s cheek, I smiled. “Thanks for the movie. I’ll call you next week.”

“He’s a prick. You deserve better, Abby!” Jimmie yelled, as I eased myself inside the limo.

Dorian opened a small refrigerator under the seat, his hands cupping the base of a champagne glass. “You’ve wasted no time finding another way of entertaining yourself this evening.”

“You wasted no time in standing me up,” I scoffed.

When I left his office that afternoon, Dorian said he wanted me for some ‘quality time.’ Eight-thirty rolled around before I realized he was a no-show. The food got cold and eventually the long stemmed candles I lit for dinner burned out, along with my patience.

“Meetings...clients,” he said.

Top secret meetings and clients were always the excuse. The coldness in his voice was a sword to my heart, a reminder of my temporary ranking in his life. I held on tight to his promise of our relationship becoming more when the time was right.

His stony expression broke into a devious grin. “You look beautiful in that dress and your enthusiasm is charming. But watching you masturbate will reimburse me, Miss Torrance.”

My stomach dropped and quivered as I pressed my thighs together. He was going to punish me.

I tugged at the straps of the red shoes he’d bought me, eyeing him as he sipped from the flute and moved his gaze toward the window. Overtaken by the need to be the object of his fascination, I almost begged him to turn those onyx eyes back on me. His attention was the only thing that kept me from going under.

“Dorian, please I-”

My words were cut off with the sharp turn of his head. Relief came in a warm caress, but suspicion moved in with a lift of his brow. The small amount of light coming through the tinted windows deepened the masculine angles of his face, lending them a sternness that echoed in his voice.

“No other men. I thought I was quite clear about that when we discussed the terms of our agreement, three months ago.”

“Jimmie is just a friend.”

“Jimmie is a man. A distraction.”

“A distraction from being pissed. I don’t like being stood up.”

I sounded so offended, but I had no right. Closing my eyes I regrouped, reminding myself that I freely agreed to make myself available to him. Dorian kept up his end of the arrangement. He took care of me, changed my life for the better. My phone stopped ringing from creditors, he gave me a great job at his company, and I had food on the table in a fabulous apartment. He seemed to know my every need before I voiced them. I could push aside my hostility and take his punishment and occasional negligence.

“You are mine, all mine.” he announced.

His words, saturated with power and ownership, sustained my hungry heart. I could hold out as long as it took, accepting the way things had to be until Bianca was more emotionally stable, and Dorian could ask her for a divorce. I had waited longer on losers, lazy assholes who wouldn’t work in a pie factory. This time I had struck gold.

Reaching over, I grabbed the seat when Dorian impatiently knocked on the divider and the limo picked up speed.

As far back as I can remember, I've loved books. I love reading them and finally, I've admitted to myself that I love to write them. Since the day I started to write Rain and Dominick's story, I've never looked back.

When I write, much of the time the story plays in my head as a movie and sometimes even includes background music. We can all use a little background music. I try to add elements of things I love. And share them with the readers. I'll continue to create characters and stories that you can laugh, cry, love, hate and even become slightly crazy about. Let's face it, we can all use some crazy every now and then.

Book Feature: Dream Vacation Book 8 In The Dream Series By James Dibenedetto

Blurb for Dream Vacation (book 8 in the Dream Series)

But her gift has taken an unwanted vacation, and without it, Sara has no idea how to rescue Grace. In a foreign city, with no clues, and her dreaming talent failing her for the first time, Sara must figure out another way to find Grace before it's too late.

About the Dream Series
What if you could see everyone else’s dreams?  That’s the question Sara has to wrestle with in the Dream Series.  We first meet her as a shy, bookish college student who doesn’t think there’s anything extraordinary about herself.  And then the dreams start…

Over the course of the series, Sara learns to live with these supernatural dreams and all the trouble they plunge her into.  At the same time, she grows from a student to a practicing doctor; and from a single girl to a wife and mother.  But every time she thinks she’s got everything figured out, life – and her extraordinary dreams – teach her that she’s always got more to learn…

Excerpt:

Three AM.  Why is it always three AM with these dreams?

“Who was it?”  He doesn’t need to ask why I’m awake and muttering at three – sorry, 3:01 AM, now.  All he needs is the details.

“Grace,” I say.  He stares at me, his eyes asking a question.  I hold his eyes, shrugging apologetically, and he’s got his answer.  A whole conversation in five seconds and one word – I guess that’s what happens after almost fourteen years of marriage.

“You were going to tell me last night, weren’t you?”

I was.  But when I walked into the bedroom and saw him lying there, just waiting for me – well, what was I supposed to do?

I scoot up next to him, smile, and trace a finger the whole length of his scar.  It really isn’t that bad.  I did about as well as anyone could have when I operated on him, considering the circumstances.  If I’d had more time to prepare, or a full surgical team, or the right facilities, there might not be a visible scar at all.  But I didn’t – and if I hadn’t operated when I did, in the middle of that horrible storm a year and a half ago, I might not have a husband now.

He doesn’t mind the scar, and, anyway, it’s just something we have in common now.  I still have the old scar from my appendectomy, so we match.  His finger goes to it now, and I shudder a little at his touch.  Just like always.  “What can I say?  I just can’t resist you.”

“I get that,” he says, with a wicked grin.  “And you didn’t tell me beforehand because…?”

He knows perfectly well why.  “You can’t keep a secret.  I mean, you can at work, I know that.  But not with me, or the kids.”

He starts to shake his head, but I glare at him, and he sighs heavily.  “I admit it,” he says finally.  It’s the same reason that, when we want to really surprise one of the kids on their birthday, I handle everything.  Brian and I agree on a dollar amount and a general idea, but I buy the actual gift myself, and he doesn’t see it until it’s unwrapped.

Book Review On Copyright By Lori Lesko

Blurb: Amber Tyler is living every author’s dream: her books are all best sellers and she writes full time. She has worked hard and is well-accomplished in her career, and she has the support and love of her beautiful children and girlfriend.

But the dream soon turns into a terrible nightmare when her latest manuscript is stolen. She decides to fight for what is rightfully hers, only to find that the harder she tries, the easier it all slips through her fingers, putting her career, her family, and her life in jeopardy.

                                               ***

I normally don’t read books like this, because I’m more into the paranormal/fantasy genre. However, I’m glad I did. The story was really good.

Amber Tyler is a bestselling author. She has it made. She lives in a beautiful house on the beach, has two wonderful kids, and a gorgeous girlfriend. The story opens with Amber working on her book. She has a heart attack and has to go into immediate surgery. With the help from her loving family, she recovers from her chest cracking surgery. One day she decides to invite the father of her son’s girlfriend over for dinner.

He’s a lawyer.

He’s pleasant.

He’s down-to-earth.

And he wears thousand dollar suits.

During their friendly conversation, Amber discovers the book she was working so hard on prior to her heart attack has been stolen. Not only that, it’s been published, and it’s a best seller. Amber hires this lawyer and while he’s working on her case, her life spirals out of control.

F.Y.I. This book gets suspenseful from here.

Seriously.

My heart was racing throughout some of the scenes. I don’t have high blood pressure, but I bet it was jacked up from time to time. That’s how good of a job this author did.

Amber is a recovering addict. With the stress she’s under, she gives into her self-destructive side and backslides to drinking alcohol and doing drugs again. This author did a wonderful job capturing what it’s like to be an addict.

Amber’s family kicks her out, and her life gets worse from there. It’s crazy what she goes through and the thoughts that rolls through her head. You're there, along for the ride with her, and let me tell ya . . . it's a dark, twisted road where alcohol and drugs becomes her master and she's its puppet.

Yes, I'm thinking of Master of Puppets by Metallica, because that song fits  Amber's addiction.

This book is well worth the read, and I would recommend it.

Book Review on One By One by Yawatta Hosby

I was happy to receive a signed copy of One By One by Yawatta and promised to give an honest review.

Okay, let me tell ya, if you’re into movies like Scream, Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street, you’re going to dig this book. I grew up watching those movies, so when I read this book, it took me back to my teenage years. I was suddenly fourteen, sitting in the dark with my friends on a weekend night, watching a horror movie. I treasure those times and couldn’t help feel nostalgic as I was reading this book.

One By One is about Rae and her older brother Kenan. Years ago their parents were brutally murdered at their cabin deep in the woods in Virginia. They saw the whole thing and since then it haunts their waking hours. Kenan talks Rae into going back there to meet a guy who wants to buy the cabin. At first she objects, but then finally agrees to go. Kenan tries to make it a fun trip for Rae by inviting a group of their friends along. Rae’s best friend Marissa, though, picks up a stranger and invites him along. His name is Adam. Pretty boy. Mr. Zipadeedoo. Nobody is pleased about it, but nevertheless, they allow him to tag along.

What I really like about this book is the human psychology Yawatta implemented into this story. She skillfully shows how each character reacts mentally and physically when people begin to die. Paranoia quickly sets in among the group when they discover a body. At first they point their fingers at Adam, but not too long after that, doubt seeps through their minds. Friendships crack as they become wary of each other, thinking one of them can be the killer.

My favorite characters in this story are Rae and Logan. Rae may be a broken shell of a person, which is totally understandable considering her trauma years ago–watching helplessly as both her parents were mercilessly slain, and she was raped. I don’t think anybody can ever recover from something that horrific. But regardless of what happened to her, she’s a kick ass person. And Logan . . . well, he’s a sweet guy. He’s somebody you’d crow about if he were your boyfriend.

Rae’s brother Kenan is very protective over Rae. He knows how mentally delicate she is and does his best to take care of her. I warmed up to him straight away because I always wanted a brother and thought he was so sweet and caring to Rae. But when he and his girlfriend Selma get into an argument, I quickly changed my mind about him. I thought he could have handled their lovers spat better.

Anyway, Yawatta keeps you guessing on whom the killer is.

Is it Adam, the metrosexual guy who would melt in the rain?

Is it somebody lurking in their neck of the woods?

Or is it one of them?

You’re just going to have to read One By One to find out.

I would recommend this book to anybody who is into this type of story.

Book Feature-One By One by Yawatta Hosby

Today I’m featuring a book by the wonderful author Yawatta Hosby. Check it out.

BACK COVER BLURB:

Rae faces a dilemma when her brother, Kenan, announces a man wants to buy their log cabin in Virginia. A place abandoned after they helplessly watched their parents tortured and killed inside.

Rae reluctantly agrees to travel with her brother to sign over the deed once he mentions their six friends are tagging along for moral support. Before the road trip begins, Marissa, Rae's best friend, picks up a stranger for a weekend hook-up.

The next morning, two of her friends have disappeared from their room. And worse, someone has sabotaged their two Jeeps, leaving them stranded.

Alone in the woods, thirty miles from civilization with no cell phone reception, the weekend turns into a deadly game when a killer hunts Rae and her friends. They struggle to stay alive and discover the truth.

Is someone stalking them, or is there a killer among the group?

Reminiscent of "Harper's Island," ONE BY ONE is a disturbing mystery thriller where a group of friends let paranoia get the best of them. With suspense and betrayal, it'll also remind readers of "Scream." Someone never intended for them to leave the cabin and will follow through with the plan by any means necessary.

ONE BY ONE EXCERPT:

Kenan leaned against the Jeep while Tobey pumped gas. They stood alone. "Brady made a point in the car. What if Adam is dangerous?"

Tobey cracked his neck. "We could take him," he said matter-of-factly. Not cocky. Not aggressively. He wasn't the kind of guy to jump into random fights or shouting matches to prove his manhood, but if he needed to protect himself or loved ones, that wouldn't be a problem for him.

Within the few minutes he spent outside, Tobey hadn't noticed any cars pull into the parking lot or drive past. Was this a ghost town? One of those places where crazy locals took turns tormenting, terrorizing, and murdering outsiders, who foolishly stopped in this No Name, NoHintOfItOnAMap town? Or worse yet, what if the town was full of racists?
