Devil’s Third

Genre: YA*Paranormal*Fantasy*Romance

Excerpt:
After Nathan gave me a passionate kiss that made me weak in the knees and then left the room, I sat on the couch and went back over the instructions in the Book of Shadows. I didn’t really have to because when I looked at it earlier, my immortal mind had already absorbed all the information I needed. But I did it anyway . . . for comfort I think. Or maybe I was stalling.  Taking a deep breath, I set the book down. Nathan had given me only two hours to do this, so I’d better get on it.

I stepped into the circle and immediately felt a change in temperature. It was much warmer inside this barrier, and I felt at peace, like I had the last time I sat inside it.

Weird, but cool.

I lit the candles, welcoming each element as I did so. After I dipped the point of the Athame into the bowl of salt, I raised it in front of me and said, “Let all malignity and hindrance be cast aside, and let all good enter herein. I bless thee that thou aides me, in the names of Cernunos and Aradia.” Pointing the tip of the knife down, from north back to north, I went around the perimeter. “I conjure thee oh circle of power that thou be a place of love and truth, a shield against wickedness and evil, and a boundary between the world of men and the realms of the mighty ones. I bless thee and consecrate thee in the names of Cernunos and Aradia.”

I set the Athame down, lit the incense sticks that were in an ornately carved holder and waved it in the air, the thick smell of sandalwood engulfing me. Afterward, I picked up the shiny copper bowl, pinched the granules between my forefinger and thumb and then scattered salt from east back to east again. When I finished, I faced that direction with the Athame back in my hand and raised it. Making a sign of a star in the air before me, I said in a commanding voice, “Ye Lords of the Watchtowers of the east. Ye Lords of air. I do summon, stir, and call ye up to guard my circle.” Turning to the south, then west, I did the same routine as the first, except I used the element representing each one: fire for south and water for west. When I reached north, again I made the sign of the star before me and said, “Ye Lords of the Watchtowers of the north. Ye Lords of earth. Boreas, thou Guardian of the northern portals. Thou powerful God. I summon, stir, and call ye up to guard my circle. So mote it be.” I kissed the tip of the knife before placing it beside the incense on the eastern part of the circle.

The candles flickered and danced around in their short crystal containers, as if a draft  sailed through them. The hair on my arms rose when I noticed the incense smoke twisting and whipping around the edges of the barrier. Taking another deep breath, I sat in the middle, lotus style and closed my eyes, concentrating on turning the lights off. Half a minute later, an instant buzz of energy swirled through me when the shadow behind my eyelids grew darker. I knew then the lights went out, and the high I was feeling came from its energy that transferred into me.

Crap.

Maybe I shouldn’t have done that because I might be too wired to go into a meditative state.

Crap . . . crap . . . crap.

Sighing, I lifted my hair off my shoulders. I had to at least try and subdue this wiry energy because I didn’t have much time. I switched positions, deciding to lie on my back and took deep, cleansing breaths. In through the nose. Out the mouth. Eyes closed. In through the nose. Out the mouth.

Slow.

Calm.

Breaths.

One by one, I concentrated on relaxing each part of my limbs while slowly breathing. The incense entombed my body in its thick, heady aroma, lending assistance in the unseen layer of transcendence.

As each muscle relaxed, the energy inside me became docile, cuing me to focus on Carrie and nothing else.

My mind flipped through memories of her like flash cards, daring to be recognized and answered by Carrie herself. It called to her, and at the same time I realized I could no longer feel my body. I sat up and looked around. The circle around the pentagram was glowing a beautiful lavender color.

Huh.

The candles were still flickering, the incense still burning. I rose, thinking, okay cool, some magic was going on here. Awesome. At least I’d accomplished casting a circle and providing protection from outside malevolent forces. But now what? Then, something at the edge of my vision caught my attention. I turned, my gaze moving to the figure on the floor.

Holy crap!

The figure was me!

What the hell?

Book Feature & It's FREE Today & Tomorrow! The Fall of Lilith by #Author Vashti Quiroz-Vega

Hello, everyone! I’m so happy to be here at Rebekkah Ford's Blog. Thanks for inviting me, Becki!

My name is Vashti Quiroz-Vega and I’m a writer of Fantasy, Horror and Thriller. If you enjoy reading short stories in those genres and poetry you can do so on my blog, The Writer Next Door | Vashti Q. I’m here today to tell you a little about myself and to introduce my new novel, The Fall of Lilith.

I began reading, writing and storytelling early. In elementary school I drew pictures and wrote stories in comic book form and sold them for a quarter a piece. I grew up in a religious home, attended a religious private school and went to church regularly with my parents. I read many religious books. I also enjoyed fairy tales and mythology and devoured many of these types of books. I’ve always been curious about angels and other supernatural creatures. The combination of all of the above was the inspiration for The Fall of Lilith.

The Fall of Lilith is an adult (18+) epic fantasy with dark elements about angels. It is the first installment of my Fantasy Angels Series. The characters in this story are angels depicted in a very unique way. It is a story of many twists, surprises and a bit of controversy.

Blurb:

“I merely assisted you in doing what you desired all along.”
So says Lilith, the most exquisite of the angels. The two most important pledges an angel makes to God are those of obedience and celibacy, and dire consequences await any who break their oaths.
At first, the angels are happy in their celestial home, learning and exploring together. As they grow older, though, Lilith begins to question these pledges, which now seem arbitrary and stifling. Her challenge of the status quo leads to disagreement, jealousy, and strife among her peers. As the arguing and acrimony grow, lines are drawn and sides are chosen. Is war inevitable?
Filled with robust characters, incredible landscapes, and exciting action, The Fall of Lilith is an epic tale of seduction, betrayal, and revenge.

Free Will involves asking difficult questions and making hard choices, choices that require strength and sacrifice. These decisions can tear apart friendships and cause rifts between allies.
They can even threaten the foundations of Heaven.

“The Fall of Lilith is a compelling narrative that provides background on several well-known, supernatural figures. Though obviously religious in nature, Quiroz-Vega’s book strays far from traditional biblical text. Sea monsters, mermaids, and vampires share the stage with angels and demons. And illicit (and explicit) affairs, violent battles, and graphic injuries abound. Quiroz-Vega’s prose is incredibly descriptive. A well-written, descriptive, and dark creation story.”–– Kirkus Reviews

As a gift to her readers, Vashti is giving this ebook away for FREE. But you better grab it now because this offer ends soon! If you do download The Fall of Lilith, which I already have, please do a review and post it to Amazon. It doesn’t have to be long. It helps authors out. Thank you. You can get it for free hereà  https://www.amazon.com/Fall-Lilith-Fantasy-Angels-book/dp/B074CPKLHH/

Interview with a Dark Spirit.

You’re not going to believe this, but I was able to get an interview with the one and only Ameerah. Of course, she already had told me her story, so I didn’t think she’d be up for an interview.

Why?

Well . . . because at the moment she’s not too fond of humans, that’s why.

How did it happen?

It was the other night. I was talking to my dad on the phone. He lives in Ohio. I live in North Dakota. He’s still having a hard time with my step-mother’s sudden death, and I’ve been checking in on him. Anyway, ten minutes after I hung up the phone, no shit, it rang. I didn’t recognize the number on caller I.D. so I didn’t answer. The answering machine picked up, and Ameerah’s voice rang throughout the room, telling me to pick up. She told me she was bored and thought it would be interesting if I interviewed her. Of course, I jumped at the opportunity. I’m not going to tell you everything we talked about because it has to do with what’s going on in the world today and if you’ve read Ameerah, you’ll know the dark spirits who can possess soulless humans—yes, there are humans born without a soul—has their grubbing hands in our government, financial institutions, and so forth. Who do you think caused the wars, the stock market crash, the Great Depression, Vietnam . . .? Yeah, they did. Ameerah gave me some hints on what’s going to happen in our future, but I promised her I wouldn’t tell anyone . . . well, except for my husband Kevin. She did agree to that.

Anyway, here’s our conversation.

Ameerah: “For fuck’s sakes, pick up the damn phone. It’s Ameerah. I know you’re there.”

Me: “Ameerah! Omg! I wasn’t expecting you to call me. How are you?”

Ameerah: “I’m great. I’ve been teaching these cheating humans how shitty it is to betray their significant other, and I’ve been having a ball doing it.”

Me: “What about Nathan and Paige—the immortals?”

Ameerah: “What about them? They can fuck off. I’m doing a good thing here.”

Me: “Actually, I agree with you, but to be clear on what we’re talking about so the readers won’t be lost, tell us a little bit about yourself without any spoilers, and, of course about your current mission.”

Ameerah: “Yeah, okay. I’m a dark spirit who possesses soulless humans. I became one after I was murdered in 1925. It was my choice. If I were to have crossed over, I’d have to do what the lightwalkers told me.”

Me: “Lightwalkers?”

Ameerah: “Humans call them angels. They’re a pain-in-the-ass, at least, the one I met is, but according to my dark spirit friend Derek, they all are. Anyway, I’d be damned if I was going to allow another soul dictate to me on what to do. Fuck that. Besides, I wanted to pay back those who betrayed me.”

Me: “What’s it like being a dark spirit?”

Ameerah: “It’s a blast. The bee’s knees as I used to say back in my time. Imagine living whatever life you desire and choosing how you want to look. If you want to experience being a gorgeous blonde with big tits and a hard body, you can. If you want to know what it’s like to be a man, you can. What’s also nifty is I can smoke, drink, eat good food, and have sex without worrying about the consequences, because once I’m done with the host, I leave. You can’t do that shit in the afterlife. In fact, you forget about what it’s like to eat a juicy steak or a chocolate bar. Your desires for those things are gone, along with all the other pleasures one has when being in the human body.”

Me: “When you first possessed a man, what was it like and did you enjoy it?”

Ameerah: “It was the oddest thing ever and horrific.”

Me: “Horrific?”

Ameerah: “Yeah, having a schlong and balls between your legs is one thing, but sometimes the nuts get twisted in the underwear so you have to shift them so they don’t pinch, and if you have one sexy thought, your wiener begins to twitch. A throbbing follows suit. The next thing you know, you have a boner stretching against your trousers. That’s what I mean by horrific.”

Me: *roars with laughter* “I believe your first experience in the male body is in chapter twenty, and it’s hilarious.”

Ameerah: “Glad to amuse you. At the time, it wasn’t funny, although my friends thought so, but now, ninety years later, it is comical.” *laughs*

Me: “Back to the beginning of our conversation. Tell the reader what you’re currently doing to teach cheaters a lesson, and why the immortals want to stop you.”

Ameerah: *snorts* “They can’t stop me. Besides, like I said earlier, I’m doing a good thing. But anyway, to answer your first question, I find men or women who cheat, then I set them up.”

Me: “How?”

Ameerah: “With the help of my partners in crime—Ava, Derek, and sometimes Sylis—for the men we find out what type of gal they like. I then search for a soulless human with those attributes, possess her and then wait for the right opportunity to meet the fella. Eventually, we’ll end up in a hotel room I rented for the night, with a hidden camera to capture his cheating ass, or I’ll have one of my pals covertly take pictures of me kissing or doing sexual things to the scumbag. Then, we’ll give the evidence to his girlfriend or spouse.”

Me: “You do the same with cheating women as well, right?”

Ameerah: “I do, and I’ve discovered that women are just as bad, if not worst when it comes to betraying their mates. All I have to do is possess a hot muscular male, flirt with them, and the bitches are all over me.” *laughs* “Though I don’t care for the male anatomy, I do enjoy fucking the women.”

Me: “Why do the immortals want to stop you from doing this?”

Ameerah: “Because they think I’m screwing up other people’s lives when really I’m doing the person who is being cheated on a favor.”

Me: “Without giving any spoilers out, what made you decide to do this?”

Ameerah: “In 1925, I was a flapper gal, in love with my best friend, having the time of my life. I was truly happy, but then my own family double-crossed me. They took everything from me and had me wrongfully committed to an insane asylum where I endured horrible things. I was murdered in that hellhole. Like you already know, I became a dark spirit to get my revenge on those who betrayed me. I did, and I showed no mercy. In my story, I talk about my time before I became a dark spirit, when I became one, what it was like to be one, and some things that happened during the decades that followed. But to answer your question without ruining it for others, I was betrayed yet again, and now I’ve had enough. I’m taking down the pieces of shit who aren’t faithful to their loved one, at least until I get bored that is.”

Me: “Well, I see no harm in what you’re doing. My last boyfriend cheated on me, and I didn’t find out until much later. It sucked. If my husband ever cheated on me, there would be hell to pay.”

Ameerah: “You know it, girlfriend.”

Me: “I guess I should end this interview before it gets too long. I’m glad you called, though, and we should do this again. In fact, I’d like to meet you in person.”

Ameerah: “That could be arranged, and it was lovely talking with you.”

Me: “Thanks. Oh, and let me know who you’re going to possess before we meet. I realize there are dark spirits walking among us in soulless humans that we’re not even aware of. Hell, my neighbor can be one of them. But I don’t want to be caught off guard, ya know?”

Ameerah: “No problem. I’ll call you beforehand.”

Me: “Cool. It was nice talking to you. Take care and don’t be a stranger.”

Ameerah: “You, too, Becks, and I won’t. We’ll talk again.”

That was the end of our conversation. What a trip, huh? I love, Ameerah. She doesn’t care for a lot of humans, but thankfully she digs me. I like to think we’re good friends.

Anyway, if you want to check out her book. I say hers because yeah, I wrote it, but it’s her story, which is a gritty and poignant one. Here are the links to it:
