A Forgotten Kitten

Many readers enjoy Star Wars-esque stories of conflict on faraway planets, while other readers tend to stick to epic romances. Few authors have managed to combine the two genres in such a seamless way as Jessica A. Kong has in her Sea-anan Saga. She has created a highly complex story with fully developed characters, and the themes explored here are inarguably adult, yet the reading level required is no more than eighth grade. A Forgotten Kitten zips along at just the right pace, allowing the reader to digest the complexity of the plot and interrelation between the characters without having to think too hard. The story revolves around Sev, a young, handsome prince and member of a royal family who rises to become king of the Oceanan race. Sev is raised in the midst of a vicious family feud, but all seems worth it when his adoptive aunt gives birth to a beautiful little girl whom Sev falls instantly and irrevocably in love with. But when Sev’s planet collides with its own sun and collapses, he must bear the loss of his entire family, including his love as well as any memory of her. Areo, the heroine of the story, is that little girl that Sev fell for during his childhood. She is a human-feline hybrid who has grown to hate the royal family that her soul mate hails from. She undergoes a destructive event and space travel episode similar to Sev’s, and it is not too long before she has settled her new planet and with her fellow half-bloods, created a strong, thriving society. When she is brutally attacked by Daehog, everyone in her empire is scattered throughout the universe. Where does she land but the planet that Sev is currently occupying. What follows is a continually building conflict interlaced with one of the most fervently passionate love stories seen in these kinds of novels. Kong chooses not just to write about space travel, or war, or love, or family, or even racism; instead, she chooses to combine all of these classic literary themes into one amazing story. The result is a mysterious and ultimately deeply satisfying story that only leads to the craving for more from this gifted and astoundingly creative writer. Reading should always be enjoyable, especially when reading escapist literature, and Kong has remembered this and accomplished it without sacrificing plot or characterization. The task of any science fiction writer is to take alien, unbelievable concepts and present them in a way that convinces the reader they are plausible in reality, and Kong has certainly hit the mark with her second novel in this delightfully mystifying series.

My writing career began with the publication of the first two books in the Sea-anan Saga, A Lost Kitten and A Forgotten Kitten. The themes and story lines of my books are based on my real-life experience in an interracial marriage. I also incorporate experiences my triplets went through growing up, like being treated as outsiders by kids who weren’t minorities or multiracial, or, now that they’re older, being labeled or avoided. My books have a message about not judging others before you get to know them. Also, by making the differences between races more exaggerated, I emphasize how, when you look past the tiny factor of race, we all share the same basic needs, desires, and cultures.

Today’s book feature is Bygora Vandos~The Sinclair V-logs by the wonderful sci-fi author Merita King. This seems like an awesome book. Check it out.

Shib looked at the sensor readout and nodded. He was pleased that his calculations were correct and the shuttle did have enough power to get them to Tellizon 4 but he was a little worried about how his companions would survive the landing. He wondered whether to tell them or not and decided that honesty is always the best policy.

"Gentlemen?" he called.

"Yeah buddy," Nef replied.

"We’re approaching the Tellizon system now and we do have enough power in the cells to reach the fourth planet."

"That’s fantastic." The group sighed with relief and grinned at each other.

"However," Shib continued, "we don’t have enough to control our landing."

"Oh shit," Crib hissed.

"What?" Jake exclaimed. "You mean we’re gonna crash after coming all this way? What the fuck?"

"Our power will run out approximately two thirds the way into our landing manoeuver, which will mean we have to glide our way in and our landing won’t be the most comfortable."

"How long do we have?" Manlee asked.

"Forty six minutes," Shib replied.

"Okay everyone, lock down," Nef yelled and the group leapt up, leaving Jake sitting there wondering what was going on.

"What can I do?"

"We have to lock down everything that isn’t already bolted down," Crib called. "Anything loose could take off your head when we touch down so either tie it down, lock it up, stuff it somewhere or sit on it. Whatever works for ya buddy, just use your initiative."

"Oh shit," Jake hissed as he too, leapt up. "Okay, yeah." He looked around and saw several boxes at the back of the shuttle, stacked together. He ran over, grabbed one, and looked around for somewhere to put it. He was about to despair when he saw the door to the toilet standing open. He stacked the boxes in the toilet cubicle, along with the ten emergency space suits he found stuffed into a corner, the boxes of emergency ration packs and a toolbox full of tools. He checked and double checked the rear section for anything loose and found nothing more so he shut the toilet cubicle door and went to join the others.

"Everything clear down the back Jake?" Ace asked and he nodded.

"Yeah, I stuffed everything into the toilet so y’all are gonna have to piss ya pants," he replied. Everyone looked round at him and one by one, started to laugh.

Manlee came rushing over and handed everyone a small package.

"Here ya go guys; I found these under a seat."

Jake took one and turned it over in his hands. It was roughly six inches square and wrapped in some kind of clear film.

"What’s this?" he asked.

"It’s a crash collar," Nef replied. "Open it up and unfold it." Jake found what looked like a twelve-inch-by-twelve-inch inflatable cushion three inches thick, with two stiff, three-inch wide bands attached to one side.

"You blow it up by pulling out that plug there," he said as he pointed to a small nipple in one corner, which Jake pulled and watched as the cushion immediately inflated.

"Then you put the two bands around your neck," Nef continued as he demonstrated, "with the cushion at the back of your head. Once we’re strapped into our seats, these will ensure that your head and neck are stabilized so that the movement of the crashing shuttle doesn’t cause your head to rock back and forth enough to damage your neck."

"Oh I see," he nodded. "Neat, thanks. I may have two broken legs and a shattered pelvis but at least I won’t have a crick in my neck." Guffaws once again filled the shuttle and this time, Manlee was amongst them.

"I would urge you all to buckle up now gentlemen," Shib called and the group leapt back into their seats and strapped themselves in. Jake struggled with his until Nef came to his aid, before strapping his backpack to a bulkhead and jumping back into his own seat.

"I’m trying to ensure we land as near as possible to one of the scientific outposts but as we will be gliding in, I cannot be accurate as to exactly how far away we will be."

"We trust you buddy," Ace yelled as the shuttle gave a lurch and Jake went white.

"It’s okay Jake," Manlee said from the next seat. "It’s just the natural turbulence of re-entry. Once we’re through the outer atmosphere things will calm down."

Jake looked at Manlee as much as the crash collar would allow and tried to smile but he was terrified and it showed.

"It didn’t jump around this much when Shib flew me up to the Mayan Queen," he remarked.

"We are going a hundred times the speed now Jake," Shib called. "And it is essential that I lower our speed considerably if we are to have a chance of survival. To do this I have to turn the ship’s nose up slightly so that we’re effectively in the belly flop posture. This is extremely un-aerodynamic which is the cause of the turbulence. Once we’re down further I can get the nose down a little and things will calm down, trust me."

"Okay," Jake hissed. "I choose to trust you buddy."

The shuttle shot down through the outer atmosphere of Tellizon 4, the belly of the craft soon becoming white-hot and the turbulence rougher with each passing second. Jake was convinced that they were going to break up any second and although not a religious man in any sense of the word, he prayed for deliverance. All at once, they broke through the cloud layer and into the bluest sky any of them had ever seen and as Shib brought the nose down and the turbulence disappeared, the engines died. The shuttle glided silently down and those in the nearest seats to the cockpit craned their necks to see out of the windows. Thick forest met their eyes and Ace wished he had not bothered to look. He turned away and gulped.

"What?" Jake asked when he noticed him pale. "What did you see?"

"It’s thick forest down there," he replied.

"Oh shit," Nef exclaimed and closed his eyes."

"So I guess that’s a bad thing huh?" Jake asked, his eyes darting from Ace to Nef and back again.

"It’s certainly not the best thing we could’ve hoped for," Nef replied.

"Why not? Won’t the trees help to break our fall or something?"

"Unfortunately not," Manlee cut in. "The first moment we hit a tree, the momentum will flip us over and we’ll end up cartwheeling down through the trees. This is probably gonna hurt guys."

"But won’t they just break under our weight?"

"This shuttle is too small and at the speed we’re traveling, any sudden change of balance will have a massive effect on the whole craft."

"For fuck’s sake," Jake hissed. "This movie better break the box office records or I’m gonna be seriously pissed."

"What’s the movie called Jake?" Manlee asked. "You never told us."

"Acts of Life," he replied. "It’s a play on words y’see. Facts of life to acts of life. It’s about this man going through a traumatic experience, but it’s also about him facing up to his life and how he gets to know himself, the real guy within and how that changes him into a better person. Up to then he’s been something he’s not, hiding behind a mask designed to keep the real person hidden away from sight and it’s all about how he finds himself again, the real person. So instead of acting someone he’s not, he becomes his true self. Y’see? Acts of Life."

"That’s a nice title," Ace said and Crib nodded. "Clever."

"Thanks," Jake smiled. "Actually I thought of it myself."

"That shows insight Jake," Manlee said. Before Jake could reply, there was an almighty bang, the shuttle lurched violently up at the rear, and everyone found themselves momentarily upside down as the craft cartwheeled twice through the air. Shib fought with the emergency glide controls and managed to right the shuttle moments before it hit the ground belly down with a bone wrenching crunch and slid several hundred yards; coming to rest facing back the way they’d come.

Hey you guys! In the past I've done a couple posts on author J. A. Huss. I've read her first two books in her I Am Just Junco series and really liked them. I also posted a book reveal on her up and coming book called Tragic. It's a new adult contemporary romance that will be out soon.

Anyway, because I think she's awesome, I decided to do this cool post and will be doing another one on this series in a couple weeks. Hey everyone – Ashur here… Junco asked me to introduce Tier’s interview since I happen to know him best. I thought I’d spice things up a bit and add my take on his questions…enjoy!

Character profile: Raubtier, Aves 039-1

Physical Description: 6’1, 185 lbs. black hair, green eyes. I think this is a stupid question, let’s move on. No one cares what I look like, only how well I fight. (ASHUR: I look just like him, only smarter.)

Actor who could play you in a movie: Next… (ASHUR: I agree, that’s like a total chick question.)

Job: Second in Command to Lucan, Captain of the 039. (ASHUR: So he thinks…)

Favorite gun: Whatever’s available when I need it, which isn’t often. (ASHUR: Tier only uses guns if they're handy, otherwise he’s all about slashing throats.)

Favorite MMA move: The flying knee because that throws them off every time. It’s like, splat, there goes your jaw. Bye… (ASHUR: Yeah, the flying knee is brutal. That shit totally hurts.)

Favorite Team Member: Ashur. (ASHUR: Awwwww…he loves me.)

Favorite vaca spot: Next… (ASHUR: Secretly, Tier loves Disney World)

Favorite food: I’ll eat anything, who cares? Food is food. Although Junco is an excellent cook and I enjoy her human meals. (ASHUR: Junco makes an awesome pineapple upside-down cake)

Age: In Clutch I’m 24. In Fledge and Flight I’m 25…Range takes place when I’m 27.

Birthday: I have no idea when my birthday was – sometime in the Clutch year of 2127 maybe. The only day that counts is your morphday. Mine is March 9, 2139 and since the 039 were all sent back from Earth at the same time, we all morphed together. So all the members of the 039 share the same morphday. (ASHUR: We have a raging fucking party every year. Invitation only.)

J. A. Huss likes to write new adult books that make you think and keep you guessing. Her favorite genre to read is space opera, but since practically no one reads those books, she writes new adult science fiction, paranormal romance, contemporary romance, urban fantasy, and books about Junco (who refuses to be saddled with a label).

Check this out you guys! J.A. Huss writes new adult sci-fi. I’ve already read her first two books in her I Am Just Junco series, and I plan on reading the rest of them as well. I’ve never got into sci-fi books, which is kinda weird because I do like sci-fi movies like Star Wars, Aliens, Predator, and so forth. I even like the old Star Trek shows, but reading science fiction was never for me–until I read Clutch. It’s the first book in J.A. Huss’ series. I think she has officially converted me to read in this genre.

The Magpie Bridge paves the way for the final installment in the new adult Series, I Am Just Junco. The final book in the Junco Epic, RETURN, will be released on December 2, 2013.

Fledge is the second book in the I Am Just Junco series. I have to say, I like Clutch--the first book in this series; however, out of the two, I like Fledge the best. In my personal opinion, I think that's a good thing because each book should be better than the first one.

My husband Kevin always says when a person is hard on the outside, they’re soft in the inside (sounds like a Tootsie Pop). I don’t know if that holds true with every individual, but with Junco (the main character) it does. She may be a foul-mouth, bad-ass warrior who has been killing people since she was a young child, but she cares.

She has a heart.

I appreciate that about her character because if she didn’t, I wouldn’t be able to sympathize with her.

At the beginning of the book, Junco is put into hyper-sleep while she goes through morph. During that time her body grows wings and talons. It reminds me of a caterpillar in a cocoon, transforming into a butterfly. Basically, that’s what everybody does who goes through morph. Afterwards, you must go through Fledge.

Fledge is a test to see if you can fulfill your potential–to prove your worth. You have to go through a series of fights and fight to the death, to earn your place. Of course, Junco goes through those fights. I’m not going to tell you what happens, but there’s a lot of action in this book.

Before the first fight, Junco befriends a 10-year-old boy named Isec. He’s one of the fighters in Fledge. Junco takes him under her wing–no pun intended–and helps him through those fights. Here’s what she says to him before the first fight and after he tells her his age:

“Ten? Isec, when I was ten I had already assassinated two world leaders on Earth. I think I know what the fuck I’m doing. So relax, because if you get killed it will be because you panic and don’t do what I fucking tell you. Got it?”

Yup, she has a potty-mouth, but ya know what? People who cuss is the most trustworthy.

It's true.

Studies on the matter have proven it. And if you're in Junco's good graces, you can trust her with your life.

Besides going through Fledge, Junco secretly comes up with a plan to save Tier. Tier was one of the main characters in Clutch. He’s an avian and was supposed to have killed Junco. He didn’t, and now he’s on trial for treason. The reader doesn’t discover Junco’s plan on how she’s going to save Tier, until the tail end of the book. But her plan makes sense and completely dodges the “eye roll” which some books unfortunately receive with over-the-top, unrealistic scenes.

I recommend this book, and I will continue to read this series because I am now hooked on it. I give this book 5 *****
